I truly believe that crystals are what got me totally hooked on beading. And now, I’m a crystal snob – I want to use ONLY Swarovski crystals and buy mostly 2xAB at that. There’s nothing like Swarovski Crystals to get your jewelry noticed.

Hexagon stitch, also called “hexagon angle weave,” is a net-like beading stitch in which the beads are arranged in hexagons. It can be an open stitch or a tighter stitch with beads that fit snugly together. It’s safe to say that hexagon stitch is little more complicated than other, more common beading stitches.

I know I’ve mentioned that I love bead netting. It works up fast and often does not use a lot of beads. Many Christmas ornament covers are made using netting. The first pattern today is a Christmas ornament cover. Try it, then make a LOT to give as gifts.

What do you get when you start with some interesting art fibers, then add a chain and some pendants? It’s the perfect recipe for a statement necklace with gypsy panache! This piece attracts endless compliments. You can find art fiber strands in various places online (etsy.com is a good source), by searching for “art fiber” or “art fiber bundle”.

I have been working on a necklace that is inspired by a nature themed art journal page I recently made.  The process of art journaling has really inspired my jewelry making lately. This knotted bead will be the focal point of the necklace I’m making.

Bead embroidery is a very different technique from many beading activities. Having bead weaving experience helps a lot, because you are already familiar with needles, thread, etc. I find the hard part is not cramming too many beads in and making it bumpy.

Soutache (pronounced SOO-tash), also referred to as “Russia braid,” is a common element in the French art of passementerie. Developed in the 16th century, passementerie encompasses a wide range of trims, braids, and tassels used as decoration on haute couture, draperies, and furnishings. In soutache and Bead Embroidery, however, lengths of soutache are “stacked” to create a more solid visual element and a stable base for the addition of beads.

This tutorial details how to create this seed bead embroidered barefoot sandal. It may also be slightly modified to work as a handflower bracelet (or formally referred to as “slave bracelets”). Time to make is (roughly) 5-6 hours for beginners and 3-4 hours for those with beading experience.

Shop Small Business Saturday (11/27/2015)

AMEX_Shop_Small_Street_RGB_SOLID_LogoI know you are all probably out in the mess they call Black Friday. My beady friends and I are having a beading day and totally avoiding the crowds. We all make a lot of our gifts, so the shopping is not so crucial to us.

Remember that tomorrow is Small Business Saturday. Your Local Bead Store (LBS) is a small business. Make sure to stop by and give your bead store some love… and money.

I’ve heard of beaders that don’t have an LBS. <shudder> It’s not fun. Those beaders don’t have the option of running to the bead store and grabbing something they need to finish a project. While you can get beads and supplies cheaper online, you can’t get beads as fast as your LBS.

Support your LBS and other small businesses – keep them open.

Many have special deals for Small Business Saturday. (You may have to turn off your browser ad-blockers to get the search to work.)
