Kumihimo Seed Bead Patterns (5/4/2015)
Kumihimo is a Japanese form of braid- making. Cords and ribbons are made by interlacing strands. The traditional “tool” is the marudai. It is expensive (relatively) and not portable. The newest “tool” is the foam Kumihimo Disk. It is portable and easy to use. One of our group saw a disk and we were off learning to make Kumihimo braids. Ring by Ring Designs

Kumihimo, the ancient Japanese art of braiding, is one of my favorite examples of how age-old crafts get new life when they’re resurrected and done with modern materials. After my initial introduction to beaded kumihimo at Bead Fest Philadelphia a few years ago, I’ve been exploring the use of some very non-traditional stringing materials for making my kumihimo braids.

Last year (or was it the year before?) I stopped by a vendor at Stitches West that was selling Kumihimo supplies. I wasn’t ready to jump into braids at that time, but I did buy some cord for some of my other beading projects. Well, I guess my time is now because I recently purchased 2 Kumihimo disks–a round one for round braids and a square one for flat braids–some seed beads, and a clasp.

After looking up on youtube.com I found out that Kumihimo is not that complicated. On the contrary, it is quite a therapeutic activity to relieve stress after a day at work. I received the square plate version rather than the more commonly used round disc. Both these polyethylene foam types are modern versions of traditional braiding looms . The round discs mimic the maru dai – the latter is faster to use as both hands are available to move the cords. But then the one-handed foam disc is far more portable than the maru dai!
