Free Kumihimo Seed Bead Patterns (8/6/2014)

2014 August 6

I have fallen madly in love with Kumihimo. I have to wonder why I did not try it earlier? I love making bead woven pendants, but now I can “display” them so much better on a kumihimo rope instead of a plain chain. So if you have been intimidated by kumihimo, give it a try!

This light and delicate kumihimo bracelet was made with yellow-green and amber colored tiny round seed beads. Size 8/0 beads braided on cream-colored 8 warps of #18 S-Lon cord  created a kumihimo bracelet that’s ¼ inch thick. Sized for a 7-inch wrist, I used around 40 beads per warp (20 of each color). This resulted in 4 bobbins of yellow-green and 4 bobbins of amber. The colors were placed in the kumihimo disk in an alternating pattern around the disk.

Just like the Pellet™ and the Thorn™ this new 5×7 mm bead had this previously hard-core seed beader scratching her head and wondering what to do with them at first. Of course I knew that a company like Preciosa … When I was all Kumihimo’d out I started experimenting with how easy it would be to use this petal shaped bead to make beaded flowers and I am happy to give the Pip bead a big tick on this front too. Just six beads connected into a circle gives you a …

Bead crochet vs. kumihimo Thu, 26 Jun 2014 14:49:00 GMT

This is one of the differences between bead crochet and Kumihimo. The patterns can be different. Another difference is that Kumihimo does not stretch; however, bead crochet does stretch because it has slip stitch knotting in the middle (if you doing slip stitch bead crochet, that is. There are several ways to do bead crochet). This is the way that those lucky enough to own a bead crochet bracelet roll it over their hand to have it snap back to exactly their wrist measurement. Kumihimo won’t be so forgiving.

New Video Magatama Kumihimo Wed, 05 Dec 2012 22:19:00 GMT

Recently, I made a video of the various Magatama Kumihimo bracelets I’ve made. It shows the different patterns that can be made and many of the different colors and color patterns. As you watch the video, see if you can pick out the ones that are the “pine cone” pattern (strung in all one direction) or the ones with random stringing. You’ve seen them all before but having them all in one place may help understanding how they really look. (Unless you have seen them in person, it really isn’t clear.) This doesn’t even touch the many variations that can be made.
