Free Brick Stitch Seed Bead Patterns (7/16/2014)

2014 July 16

Brick Stitch is very different from other stitches. While most stitches go through other beads to attach the next row, in Brick Stitch you go under the thread on top of the last row. It takes a little getting used to, but it lends itself to increases and decreases. You’ve probably seen Native American earrings made with Brick Stitch.

My Favorite Hassle-free Brick Stitch Start

I love using brick stitch for designing beaded jewelry, but I’m less than thrilled with the sometimes sloppy feel of beginning my brick stitch projects with ladder stitch. It’s been some time since we had a Basic Stitch post so here we are with a brick stitch tutorial! In brick stitch, each bead is offset from the beads below, rather like a brick in a wall (hence the name). You can use any size bead for this stitch but you’ll want to use beads that are fairly regular in size, to keep a straight line, and any of the Japanese seed beads are great for this. I’m using Toho size 11 seed beads here.

Going Round in Circles with Circular Brick Stitch

Of all the variations that can be worked with brick stitch, circular brick stitch is one of my favorites for making unique components and even beaded mandalas for things like bracelets, earrings, pendants, and even delicate beaded necklaces. Circular brick stitch, in contrast to tubular brick stitch, implies that the beadwork is created so that it creates a flat circle instead of a three-dimensional hollow tube.
