Beading Q And A: Bead and Bracelet Making Kits (7/22/2011)

2011 July 22

Ruth asks…

Bead making kit?

Does anyone know where to get it and how much it costs? I really like beads…I practically feel naked without them, but 1 string costs approximately $5 and I can’t keep buying them, so I decided I’m going to make my own. Help?

BeadGal answers:

There are loads of beads you can make with polymer clay**, (but not glass beads, etc., of course).

You can even make polymer clay look convincingly like metal, wood, stone, semi-precious stone like turquoise or jade, etc., then make beads from that. Polymer clay beads can also be made in any size, shape or color you can dream up, and holes can be created before or after baking the clay (in a home oven, toaster oven, or even on a stove top in a special way, etc.), or other connectors added to the clay.

If you’re interested in making beads with polymer clay, check out at least this page:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/beads.htm

Then for making your beads have all kinds of colors, or patterns, or specical surface effects, check out all the other possibilities from this page for making “fauxs”, using paints, metallic powders, etc., etc.:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/contents.htm
(…to browse, just scroll all the way down… Then when you find a page you’d like to investigate, click on its name from inside the alphabetical navigation bar on the left side of the page, to go to it)

**some of the brands of polymer clay are Premo, FimoClassic, FimoSoft, Kato Polyclay, Sculpey III, and Cernit

Susan asks…

Easy designs for beaded key chains?

I got a beading kit for my birthday but they have boring designs. I’m looking for quick easy cute designs I can make with beads, string, and a key chain! For example a lizard,or something cute like that please include instructions.

Carol asks…

Where can I find a bracelet making kit?

The bracelet kit with the stretchy string, and beads with letters.
At a local craft store or other.

BeadGal answers:

Check any crafts supplies store. They usually have these. Sometimes they are in the jewelry-making supplies section; other times they are in the kid crafts section. Be sure to check both.

Nancy asks…

Which store can I get artsy stuff at?

So my thirteen year old cousin is sleeping over next week and I need to know where I can get artsy stuff such as those strings to make wish bracelets, tie dye kits, beads and stuff etc.

BeadGal answers:

Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, JoAnn’s, Walmart, Target, any major supermarket store

Mandy asks…

Do they allow bracelet kits on the plane?

Like the ones that have beads and strings + scissors?

BeadGal answers:

Yes they do. It really depends what’s in your kit. If there’s a knife in there for some reason, then no. But if it’s a bunch of beads and thread clips and clasps and what not for bracelet making, then yes they do. With the scissors it’s going to be cutting it close – they usually let the dull kindergarten crayola scissors go.
Just in case, pre-cut all your strings to the sizes you think you will need. Then pack the scissors in your bag you’re checking or if you don’t have a bag going under the plane I’m sure you can get scissors at wherever you are headed. But in the end, your beads, strings and what not are going to be no problem at all..
